FAQs

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About the llamas

1. Is it possible to ride a llama?
No, llamas are pack animals and it is not possible to ride on them. We use them during the walks to carry the baggage.

2. How much weight can a llama carry?
An adult llama can carry between 25 and to 30 Kilograms (55 –66 pounds). This load can vary depending on the size of the animal, his age and the distance to travel. The cargo is always taken by male animals (mostly gelded).

3. Are llamas dangerous animals?
No. The Llama (Lama glama) is the domesticated specie of the Guanaco (Lama guanicoe, wild animal). In addition to being domesticated, our llamas are tamed by special techniques through a positive stimulation. This means that they are used to the contact with humans and that they obey the person in charge.
The way in which the llama attacks is the spit, but generally they do it among each other to obtain more grass to eat.

4. How much does a llama live?
Llamas can live more than 15 years. They can work as cargo animals between 3 and 10 years old.

About the trips

5. How are the trips?
The trips are hikes (trekking) with llamas, in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (with base in Tilcara) and also in Puna (Salt Flats) and Valleys and Yungas (Calilegua – San Francisco). All the trips include a moment to rest on the hill, in which we put together tables and chairs to enjoy a nice picnic.

6. What do the trips include?
The short treks include lunch or breakfast (picnic with sandwiches, cheeses and products of the region) and refreshments during the trip. They also include wine from a Boutique Winery of the region. The long treks include all meals, water during the trip and camping gear (except sleeping bags).

7. What difficulty do the treks have?
The walks have different duration and difficulty. There are trips of half a day and light, and trips of 5 days of walk that are very demanding.

8. What places are visited?
Among the circuits we do it is possible to mention: Pucara de Juella, the devil’s Gorge, Salinas , the Valley of Maimará, Paraje de Zanjas, Abra de Punta Corral, Tumbaya, Tilcara´s Valleys (Abramayo, Yaquis Pampa, El Durazno, El Molulo), the Yungas (San Fernando, Calilegua, Ocloyas), among others.

9. Is it possible to do a family trip, with small children?
Yes. We have a special circuit to do with small children. This is ideal for children of up to 8 years. Children of more age can do a more demanding trek, walking up the mountain.

10. How are the trips of two or more days?
The long walks are programmed to spend the night on the hill, in tents or lodged at houses and refuges of the people from the zone (to these places it is only possible to arrive by foot, because they are in the middle of the mountain). The best thing of these long treks is that while we walk we do not carry anything, since the llamas carry all meals and camping gear.

11. Is it necessary to climb the mountain at any moment?
No. We walk all the time in ancient llama footpaths, created in the era of the Incas and before, and maintained at the present by the local people.

How to book a trip

12. Are the trips programmed in fixed days during the year?
We set the dates of the trips as people request them. In the short walks we can go out every day; on the other hand the long walks have to be prepared in advance. We usually announce the long treks programmed during the year in our home page .

13. How can we book a trip?
To organize a trip we ask for a minimum of two people. You can book a trek by e-mail (recommended) or you can contact us by phone. We always recommend booking in advance (short or long walks) to assure availability. Reservations can be made through a bank deposit of half the value of the trip.
To book a trip diretly in Tilcara you can contact us by phone (0388-154088000) or in the llama yard: Half-day trips can be arranged one day in advance; the trip to the Salt flats and long journeys, two or more days in advance.

14. How much does it cost?
We invite you to see each trip in this link
